Field of Study: teacher training and education science

The study of Hungarian language and Hungarian literature has a long tradition at the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University, dating back to 1923. Important personalities who have taught in this field in the past were the literary scholars and writers Sándor Csanda, Zoltán Fónod, Lajos Grendel, Jaroslava Pašiaková, Árpád Tőzsér, Lajos Turczel, and the linguists László Zeman, Ferenc Sima, István Jakab and others.

The implementation of the study programme is provided by the Department of Hungarian Language and Literature. This field of study can be studied in a teacher training programme in combination with another field of study.

 

STUDY CONTENT

The study content is divided into language and literature. The content of the linguistic part is made up of compulsory and compulsory elective courses focused on the structure, patterns and ways of functioning of the Hungarian language in its present form (fundamentals of linguistics, Hungarian grammar, lexicology and semantics of the Hungarian language, stylistics of the Hungarian language, bilingualism and contactology). The content of the literary part of the study consists of compulsory and compulsory elective subjects aimed at acquiring knowledge of the history of Hungarian literature from its beginnings up to the present, at acquiring literary-theoretical knowledge and knowledge of the contextual connections of Hungarian literature with world and Slovak literature, and knowledge of the interpretation of a literary text.

 

BASIC STUDY PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are expected to have an active interest in and a passion for the study of Hungarian language and literature as well as foreign languages and literatures, a general cultural outlook, the ability to think critically on their own and communicativeness. The recommended profile subjects from secondary school which are a good basis for the study of this study programme are Hungarian language and literature, foreign languages and literatures, aesthetics, history of art, social studies and history. For successful completion of the study, a knowledge of Hungarian at the level of the mother tongue and a final examination in the subject of Hungarian language and literature are required.

 

GRADUATES’ EMPLOYMENT

A graduate of the Bachelor’s degree study in Hungarian language and literature is able to work independently, to apply the acquired linguistic and literary knowledge in school practice and in various activities in the sphere of culture. He/she acquires interpretive skills and communication skills in oral and written expression.

A graduate of the Bachelor’s degree study may continue his/her study at the Master's degree level in the combined teacher training programme or may find employment as a teaching assistant or as a worker in various cultural and social institutions where cultivated linguistic expression is required. After obtaining a full university education in this field, the graduate can work as a teacher of Hungarian language and literature at all school levels, as an editor in publishing houses and editorial offices of newspapers and magazines, an employee of advertising and other agencies, an assistant in the state and public administration.  Outstanding graduates may apply for doctoral study.

 

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants will be admitted to all teaching programmes on the basis of a general aptitude test as part of the National Comparative Exam, which is provided by www.scio.cz, s. r. o.
