Sigillography, Numismatics, Phaleristics

Course objective:

In the lectures, students will acquire basic information about sigillography, numismatics, and phaleristics. They will become familiar with the development of these auxiliary historical sciences, their terminology and methodology, sources, literature, and the current state of research. They will gain knowledge about the description, typology, and identification of sigillographic, numismatic, and phaleristic sources and their use in historical and archival research.

Course syllabus:

  • Introduction to sigillography, subject of study of this discipline
  • Typology and history of seal usage
  • Scientific description of sigillographic sources
  • Introduction to numismatics, subject of study of this discipline
  • Beginnings of coin minting in the territory of Slovakia
  • Periodization of Hungarian coinage
  • Introduction to phaleristics, subject of study of this discipline
  • The most significant chivalric and merit orders in Europe and Hungary
  • Habsburg merit orders and decorations in the 18th–20th centuries
  • The most significant orders and decorations in Czechoslovakia/Slovak Republic

Requirements for completion:

  • Regular attendance (maximum 3 absences)
  • Successful completion of a midterm written test (in the 8th week of the semester, 40% of the grade) and a final test (during the exam period, 60% of the grade)
