Archontology and Prosopography

Course objective:

During the lectures, students will acquire basic information about archontology and prosopography. They will become familiar with the development of these auxiliary historical sciences, their terminology and methodology, sources, literature, and the current state of research. They will gain knowledge about archontological sources, their interpretation, and the collection of biographical data, as well as the compilation of archontological tables and biographies of historical figures.

Course syllabus:

  • Introduction to archontology and prosopography, the subject of study of these disciplines
  • Archontological terminology, tables, profiles, overviews
  • Archontological sources, editions, and scholarly literature
  • Biographical research of officials
  • Provincial and royal officials, the most important nationwide and regional offices
  • County and municipal officials
  • Noble landlords' officials and familiars of noble courts

Requirements for completion:

  • Regular attendance (maximum 3 absences)
  • Writing a seminar paper (30% of the grade)
  • Successful completion of a midterm written test (in the 8th week of the semester, 30% of the grade) and a final test (during the exam period, 40% of the grade)
