Prof. Ján Lukačka specializes in medieval history of Slovakia with focus on the region of south-west Slovakia – history of settlement, formation of nobility in the area of Slovakia in the Middle Ages, castle studies, history of towns, regional history. He has published numerous studies and monographs, including Krátke dejiny Slovenska (A Short History of Slovakia) in several language mutations, and monographs Formovanie vyššej šľachty na západnom Slovensku (Formation of Upper Nobility in Western Slovakia) and Matúš Čák Trenčiansky. Among the awards he received are: Literary Fund Award, award for his pedagogical activity at the Faculty of Arts of University of Trnava, Award for Merits for the Faculty of Arts of Comenius University, Daniel Rapant Prize. He has led 5 grants and the Centre of Excellence at the Institute of History of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, and served as a member of the VEGA committee. Among his former students are Miriam Hlavačková, Marek Púčik, Angelika Herucová, Vladimír Vlasko, Žofia Lysá.
