Dr. André Pina

André Pina is an associate researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the University of Porto (IS-UP). His research combines sociological and historical approaches, specialising in prosopography.

His doctoral thesis was awarded the 2025 Victor de Sá Prize for Contemporary History, and he is the author of Os Primeiros Comunistas. A Génese do Partido Comunista Português (1921–1943) (2026). As a visiting researcher at the Department of Slovak History, he is reconstructing the Central European backgrounds of three communists who became important figures in the early organisation of the Portuguese Communist Party: Gyula Káposztás and Vilma Klein, both born in Rožňava, and Bernard Freund, a Czechoslovak citizen. Through their trajectories, the project explores how Comintern networks connected Central Europe and Portugal in the interwar period.
