Objective:

The course focuses on the origins and development of the museum phenomenon and museology in the world and in Slovakia. It presents the different stages of its development, from collecting in the ancient period, the institutionalisation of museology from the ancient museion, temple treasures, monarchical collections, collecting of the nobility and bourgeoisie to the establishment of the first museums in the 18th century. It looks at the growth of museums in the 19th and 20th centuries, their focus, subdivision, and specialization, as well as the changes in the perception of museums from strictly scientific institutions to the development of specialized programs for particular strata of society.

• History of collecting and institutionalization of the museum phenomenon in Europe and the world
• The emergence of modern museums and their focus in our country and in Europe
• Institutionalization of museology after World War II, legislation, professional associations
• Development of museology in Slovakia – stages
• The state of museology in the 20th century
• Museum trends at the beginning of the 21st century.

Graduation requirements:

• Attendance - 3 hours can be missed without excuse,
• Active completion of ongoing tasks (100%),
• Final assessment during the exam period = 90% (assessment of theoretical and practical knowledge in the form of a test).
