Objective:

Students will gain an orientation in the development of museology as a science, the subject of its research, personalities of world and Slovak museology.

Brief outline:

  • The subject of study of historical museology.
  • Genesis of the museum relationship.
  • Periodization of the development of the museum phenomenon.
  • History of collecting and institutionalization of the museum phenomenon.
  • The Middle Ages, Renaissance cabinets, kunstkammer and naturkammer.
  • The emergence of modern museums and their focus at home and in Europe.
  • The state of museology at the beginning of the 20th century, stages of development in the first half of the 20th century. 20th century.
  • Trends of museum development in the 2nd half of the 20th century. 20th century.
  • Development of museological theory in the 20th century.
  • European and non-European schools of museology and their representatives.
  • Czechoslovak Museological School.
  • Museology in Slovakia and Czechoslovakia in the interwar period.
  • Changes in Slovak museology after 1948, pluses and minuses.
  • Museum organisation and international cooperation.
  • International Council of Museums ICOM.

Graduation Requirements:

  • The instructor will accept a maximum of 2 absences.
  • Final sixty-minute quiz.
