History of Monument Preservation

Objective:
The students will acquire knowledge about the individual stages of the development of the heritage relationship in the world and in Slovakia. They will learn about the first regulations for the protection of monuments from antiquity, the first modern laws aimed at the protection of monuments adopted during the Great French Revolution to the current legislation and methods of monument protection and the personalities of monument protection. They will get acquainted with the most important international and Slovak institutions ensuring the protection and development of the monument fund.
Brief overview:
- The emergence and formation of the memory relationship in the history of human society,
- Thought currents of monument conservation in Europe in the ancient and medieval periods,
- Modern concepts of monument conservation in European countries and the emergence of legislation,
- Methods of conservation and restoration of monuments, European schools and trends in the 19th and early 20th centuries,
- Formation of monument conservation in the 19th century in the Habsburg Monarchy and in Slovakia,
- Development of monument conservation in Hungary – institutions, methods, restoration actions, personalities of monument conservation until 1918,
- European trends of monument conservation and their representatives in the first half of the 20th century,
- Development of restoration methods and theory of monument conservation in the second half of the 20th century, International Council on Monuments and Sites ICOMOS and its documents,
- Formation of monument conservation in Slovakia between 1918 and 1945, organization and personalities,
- Establishment of the Institute of Monuments and its activities,
- Development and changes in the organisation of monument protection from the 1990s to the present.
Graduation requirements:
- Attendance – 3 hours can be missed without excuse,
- Active completion of ongoing tasks (100%),
- Final assessment during the exam period = 90% (assessment of theoretical and practical knowledge in the form of a test).
