History of Bratislava 2 (Coronation Pressburg)

Course objective:
This course is part of a multi-semester lecture series on the history of Bratislava. It focuses on the early modern period, which was one of the most significant eras in the city's history. At that time, Pressburg was the capital and coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary. Individual lectures are focused on various thematic areas of the city's and its inhabitants' history. Students will also gain an overview of sources related to the history of Pressburg.
Course syllabus:
- Introduction to the history of Pressburg in the early modern period
- Sources for the study of the city's history
- Older scholarly literature (domestic and foreign)
- Chronology of city history 1526–1780
- Historical and genealogical topography of the city
- Urban elites and city administration
- Burghers and bourgeois life, ethnic diversity of the population
- Nobility in the kingdom’s capital
- Coronations of Hungarian monarchs
- Heraldic symbols of city inhabitants
- Pressburg mint
- Coaching inns and municipal baths
- Jesuits and re-Catholicization of the capital
Requirements for completion:
- Regular attendance (maximum 3 absences)
- Writing a seminar paper (40% of the grade)
- Successful completion of the final exam (during the exam period, 60% of the grade)
