GIS and Data Visualization in a Cartographic Environment

or how to visualize your data on the map

Lecturers: Mgr. Miroslav Baranek

Form of teaching: lecture with seminar (P:1 / S:1)

ECTS: 4

Cieľ:

The course introduces students to the basic principles of working with geographic information systems (GIS) and their applicability in scientific research in the humanities and in the presentation of cultural heritage (tangible and intangible), but especially their own data.

The student will learn to work independently with GIS, to create their own map outputs and to participate in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research on cultural landscapes and the presentation of cultural heritage. The graduate of the course will be able to import historical data (e.g. data on house owners and occupants) into a GIS and use an interactive web map to present the results of their research to the general public. This is a practically oriented course whose graduates are currently in high demand in the labour market.

Stručná osnova:

  • Introduction to GIS (possibilities of use in historical sciences, installation, start-up, orientation, terminology, CRS, data sources, plugins)
  • Raster data sources (global, domestic)
  • Sources and creation of vector data (point, line, polygon)
  • Working with raster data (georeferencing, symbology, raster calculator, raster conversion)
  • Working with vector data (editing, symbology, conversions, spatial tools)
  • Creating map outputs
  • Attribute table (creation, editing, attribute calculator, data import and export), queries (spatial and attribute)
  • GIS applications in historical sciences (geospatial analysis, geodatabases, source editing)
  • Interactive web map (qgis2web plugin)
  • Creation of 3D maps (3D building models)

Podmienky na absolvovanie predmetu:
