Objective:

The subject provides students with a comprehensive view of the emergence and functioning of modern offices, the emergence of registry systems and office procedures from the mid-19th century to the present. Students will become aware of the historical basis of today's records management and the historical development of the formal and content features of modern documents. They will acquire knowledge about the specifics of modern diplomatics and its greatest challenges associated with the enormous increase in written production of the modern era. They will master the research methods of modern diplomatics and apply the acquired skills in the analysis and interpretation of modern written sources.

Brief outline:

  • Definition of modern diplomatics and the subject of its research, specific features and main features
  • Development of modern diplomatics and the most important personalities - from Jean Mabillon to Luciana Duranti
  • Transformations of written production of modern institutions and the functioning of the modern office in Hungary and Czechoslovakia (from 1848 - to the present)
  • Development of registries and registry systems, office procedures and records management
  • Typology and characteristics of modern diplomatic categories
  • Development of formal features of modern records
  • Research methods of modern diplomatics and their development (analytical, comparative, genetic, systematic-classification method, combined method)
  • Specifics of formal and content analysis and interpretation of modern written sources

Requirements for graduation:

  • Regular attendance at lectures, three missed classes without an excuse are accepted.
  • Preparation of a seminar paper focused on the diplomatic analysis of selected modern document (30%).
  • Completion of a final online knowledge test (70%).
