Cultural Heritage in the Age of Cancel Culture

Objective:

Philosophical and sociological assessment of changes in the conception of cultural heritage in the Euro-Atlantic area over the last sixty years. Implications for the creation and presentation of material heritage in particular. Analysis of positive and controversial contributions to the conception of culture, especially museum culture. For students of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University, 1st and 2nd degree.

Brief outline:

  • Basic terminology - heritage, cultural heritage, cancel culture, woke.
  • Socio-economic changes in Western society since the 1960s. Dissolution of the colonial system.
  • Emphasis on cultural aspects of non-minority or directly marginalised sections
  • of society (minority ethnic, national, religious, women, LBGT+ etc.).
  • Philosophical-sociological sources of contemporary conceptions of culture.
  • Culture of interference, woke movements, etc.
  • Comparison of Western European and Slovak approaches.
  • Critical study. Critical and reflexive museology, The museum as predator.
  • Decolonization, restitution, repatriation of heritage.

Graduation Requirements:

  • The instructor will accept a maximum of 2 absences.
  • Final sixty-minute quiz.
