Collection and Scientific Research Activities

Objective:
The outcome of the training is to explain to students the concept and diversity of the collection object, the collection, the typology of collections, and especially the collection as a structure. The student will gain an overview of the differences between collecting and collection building, the importance of scientifically systematic and scientifically built collections, the theory of selection and thesauri. The listener will be familiar with the current legislation and current problems of collecting activities in Slovakia, as well as with the basic approaches and problems of digitisation of collection objects.
Brief outline:
- The theory of selection and thesauri.
- Museum collection object, its understanding and meaning.
- Collection, collection development and collection holdings in relation to the museum profile.
- Forms of accession and deaccession, accompanying documentation.
- Scientific research activity in the museum - research methods and techniques.
- Scientific processing of collections.
- Methodology of collections development - law, decree of 2015, tendencies of Slovak legislation.
Graduation Requirements:
- The instructor will accept a maximum of 2 absences.
- Final sixty-minute quiz.
