Department of Philosophy and History of Philosophy

Welcome to the Department of Philosophy and History of Philosophy

Philosophy has been cultivated at Comenius University for over 100 years. Since its establishment, the department has become the centre of philosophical life in Slovakia. At its beginnings, prominent Czech professors (J. Král, J. Tvrdý) and later such founding figures of modern Slovak philosophy as I. Hrušovský and V. Filkorn stood by. The department has educated entire generations of contemporary Slovak philosophers, working at other universities in the country and abroad. Several prominent foreign philosophers have given guest lectures at the department. 

In its recent history, the department has been mainly devoted to research into the history of philosophy, which resulted in the monumental editions Anthology of the Works of Philosophers (10 volumes) and Philosophical Heritages (20 volumes). This research is currently being followed up by works on French, feminist and Anglo-American philosophy. The department publishes its own collection of studies Philosophica, organizes conferences and issues various publications including those from conferences. 

The department has extensive contacts with foreign institutions in the German, French and English-speaking areas. Cooperation with philosophical institutions in the Czech Republic is particularly developed. Students of the department have the opportunity to stay abroad within the framework of exchange programs such as Erasmus, Socrates and others.
