The Language of Humor as a Tool of Ideological Transfer in Periodicals of the Socialist Era

The doctoral dissertation will focus on the linguistic analysis of humor as a specific form of ideological discourse in the period of socialism. Its aim will be to examine the mechanisms of ideological transfer into the Slovak linguistic and cultural environment, primarily (though not exclusively) through a comparative analysis of the Soviet humour and satire magazine Krokodil and the Slovak humor and satire magazine Roháč. The research presupposes the use of tools from critical linguistics, linguistics of humor, and cognitive linguistics. Humor is approached not as an aesthetic or cultural category, but as a structured discourse mediating ideological meanings. Discourse linguistics and critical discourse analysis (Teun A. van Dijk, Norman Fairclough, and Ruth Wodak) are proposed as the overarching theoretical and methodological framework of the dissertation. A prerequisite for the successful completion of the project is a high level of philological training on the part of the candidate, active proficiency in Slovak and Russian at least at the C1 level, and the ability to work with scholarly literature in English.
