EU Complicity in the Death of Indian Democracy
Public guest session in the course 'Institutions of the EU' on the implications of the EU institutions' (in)actions for minority rights protection in India.
The talk on EU complicity in the death of Indian democracy: focus on Hindu nationalist populism against religious minorities will explore the shift in India, the world's largest democracy, towards a hybrid regime, which has manifested in the systemic violence against Muslim and Christian minorities by the current far-right Hindu nationalist government. The talk will focus on how religious populism is being used by India's far-right Hindu ruling party against religious minorities to polarise the Hindu majority for political gain. However, this would not have been possible if the Western world, and the EU in particular, had acted in accordance with its core values in its relations with India. In this context, the role of the EU is briefly discussed.
