Annotations

The subject of this dissertation is the research on the reception of translations of Chilean literature in the Slovak cultural space in the period 1948 - 2023. Its aim is to map the translations of Chilean literature into Slovak during this period and to find out what image of this Hispanoamerican literature was created in Slovakia during the seventy-five years. The research focuses on book translations of works by Chilean writers in Slovakia, but it will also include the reception of translations published in Slovak literary magazines (Slovenské pohľady, Kultúrny život, Mladá tvorba, Revue svetovej literatúry, and others).
The timeframe of the thesis is defined as the period from 1948, when the first excerpt from the work of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda appeared in the literary magazine Slovenské pohľady (the poem Puedo escribir los versos más tristes esta noche, translated by Vladimír Oleríny), until 2023, when Slovart published a translation of Isabel Allende's novel Largo pétalo de mar, the last work of Chilean literature translated by Eva Palkovičová.
The first step of the research will be to complete the existing bibliography of poetic, prose and dramatic works of Chilean authors translated into Slovak and published in Slovakia and to expand it with journal translations. Another aim will be to evaluate the role of the various actors involved in the translation process (translators, publishers, cultural institutions and others) and whether and how the role of these actors changed depending on the socio-political circumstances (before and after 1989). The thesis also aims to gradually reconstruct the "Slovak" image of Chile that translated works in Slovakia gradually represented and created.  This work should help to provide a clearer critical and literary scholarly overview of the reception of translations from Chilean literature in the Slovak literary and cultural space.
This topic has not been comprehensively treated in the Slovak cultural space and therefore this thesis could contribute to the mapping of the history of translation and reception of Hispanophone literatures in Slovakia.
