Introduction to Irish Studies

Introduction to Irish Studies is a broad introductory course that offers an interdisciplinary exploration of Ireland. Students examine key themes from history, literature, culture, music, mythology and folklore, and politics to develop a deeper understanding of Irish culture and identity, as well as Ireland’s place in Europe and the wider world. Through their studies, students are encouraged to critically assess and analyse the narratives that shape national identity, and to draw comparative connections with Slovakia and other countries.

This course is supported with funding from the Irish Government's Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht.

Irish Language and Culture

Irish Language and Culture courses explore both the Irish (Gaelic) language and Gaelic culture. Students study the history of the Irish language, its linguistic features as a Celtic language, and its nuanced place in Irish identity. The course also examines the modern status of Irish as the first official language of Ireland and as an official language of the European Union, as well as contemporary Irish-language culture. Students are encouraged to learn the basics of the language as a foundation for potential future study leading to A1 (Irish Language 2) and A2 (Irish Language 3 and 4) proficiency levels, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students of the Irish Language at UMB also have the opportunity to apply for a funded scholarship to study in an Irish-speaking region (Gaeltacht) in Ireland.

This course, and the student scholarship, are supported with funding from the Irish government's Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. Contact: James Ó Conaill, oconaill1uniba.sk
