Mgr. Jana Belišová, PhD.

Mgr. Jana Belišová, PhD. (*1965) graduated from the Departments of Ethnology and Musicology at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava in 1990. In 2010 she finished PhD studies with the thesis Song culture of Romani people in Slovakia. She has worked at the Institute of Musicology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences since 2010. In 2019 she joined the Department of Musicology in the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University in Bratislava. She specializes in the music of Romani people and is the initiator of numerous projects, including Phurikane giľa (ancient Romani songs), Hojna nejna (Romani dance songs), Karačoňa (Romani Christmas songs), Odi kaľi mačkica (Romani children’s songs), Neve giľa (New songs), Šun, Devla, šun tu man (2015), AfterPhurikane (a creative dialog between Romani musicians and musicians of other ethnicities), Phuterdo Ore (a collaborative music project of Norwegian musicians from the Kitchen Orchestra with Slovak Romani people and Iva Bittová). Her work includes anthologies, CDs, DVDs, documentary films, scientific studies, concerts, expositions, articles and lectures. She is a producer of various documentary movies, such as Cigarety a pesničky (2010), Zvonky šťastia (2012) a Ťažká duša (2017), 25 short documentary videos Šilalo paňori (2017), and she worked as a professional advisor in movies Cigán (M. Šulík), Sherlock Holmes (G. Ritchie), Černá srdce (…zem není gulatá) (B. Rychlík), Návrat bocianov (M. Repka). She inclines more towards the anthropological movement in ethnomusicology. She focuses on multidisciplinary topics, such as audiovisual ethnomusicology, urban ethnomusicology and applied ethnomusicology. She also collaborates with nonprofit organizations. She is member of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM), study groups Music and Minorities and Audiovisual Ethnomusicology.
