English for Specific Purposes, German for Specific Purposes

Course scheduled: once a week / 2 lessons

Method of Assessment: 1st to 3rd semester - 100% continuous assessment; 4th semester - 70% continuous assessment, 30% final assessment

Number of credits: 3

Subject Aim:  To acquire language and communication competences needed for professional communication in English / German. Students will learn key language elements (lexical and grammatical), linguistic styles and genres essential for successful acquisition of foreign language communication in the profession which they are being trained for in the university environment.

Course Content:

  • language exercises aimed at developing and strengthening communication competences in academic and professional environment,
  • working with model texts (popular-science, professional and scientific) in order to develop competences characteristic of the academic environment,
  • familiarization with the lexical-grammatical elements in professional style,
  • linguistic conventions in the academic environment,
  • giving presentations (principles of written / oral presentation, stylistic, linguistic, verbal elements of communication, their meaning and function),
  • production of short academic texts,
  • translation of texts,
  • structural-functional approach to linguistic phenomena is applied throughout the course.

English for Political Scientists

Type of course: workshop

Course scheduled: twice a week / 4 lessons

Method of Assessment: 1st to 3rd semester - 70% continuous assessment, 30% final assessment; 4th semester - 60% continuous assessment, 40% final assessment

Credits: 5

Subject Aim: To gain reading competence in the field of Political Science and to develop written and spoken communication competencies (discussions, presentations, academic writing).

Course Content: Students acquire basic competencies needed for reception of texts from the field of Political Science and the production of selected text genres:

  • exercises aimed at developing and strengthening the student´s reading competence,
  • subject-specific vocabulary from the field of Political Science,
  • lexical-grammatical elements of text production,
  • language in the academic environment,
  • working with model texts aimed at developing speaking and writing in the academic environment,
  • reception of complex subject specific texts in the field of Political Science,
  • revision of basic grammatical structures,
  • production of selected text genres (e.g. survey report, abstract, etc.),
  • presentation techniques and training for presenting in the academic environment.

German - Language of Sources for Students of Archive Studies and History

Type of course: workshop

Course scheduled: twice a week / 4 lessons

Method of Assessment: 100% continuously

Credits: 4

Subject Aim:  Acquisition and consolidation of language skills and communi-cation competences in the given area of ​​ communication. Students will learn and acquire key language elements (lexical and grammatical) and the styles and genres that enable successful foreign language communication in areas related to the study of archives and history.

Course Content:

  • exercises aimed at developing and strengthening communication competencies and communication in the study of archives and historical sciences,
  • linguistic conventions in the academic environment,
  • problems of subject specific texts - composition, style,
  • working with model texts with regard to the development of competencies in the given communication context,
  • exploring and learning of lexical-grammatical elements of text,
  • examples of non-verbal features and components of the text (e.g. maps, charts, drawings),
  • giving presentations (principles of written / oral presentation, stylistic, linguistic, verbal elements of communication, their meaning and function),
  • selected problem issues of translation of the primary text source.

German for Students of Archeology, Archive Studies and Classical Languages - Level A1

Type of course: workshop

Course scheduled: twice a week / 4 lessons

Method of Assessment: 100% continuously

Credits: 4

Subject Aim: To learn the language means of communication and gaining competences necessary for normal communication in the German language. Focus is on topics directly relevant in the daily life of individuals and on basic professionally oriented discourse.

The course is designed for students of archives and history with zero or minimal knowledge of German.

Course Content:

Learning and acquiring of:

  • general vocabulary relating to current everyday life with its possible application in the academic environment,
  • basic morphology,
  • syntax - consolidation and expansion of knowledge on the composition of the German sentence,
  • acquisition and development of competencies that enable normal everyday communication,
  • reception of information from simple authentic texts and simple subject-specific texts,
  • producing selected text genres in various styles.
