1. | Transformations of the publishing space in Slovakia in the years 1949-1989 in relation to translation of non-fiction texts ** | The subject of the dissertation is a heuristic research of the form, scope, structure and other characteristics of translation production in the years 1949-1989. The period of research is defined by two significant milestones: 1949 is the year of the beginning of the application of the new printing/publishing law (fundamental nationalization of publishing houses, institutionalization of the selection of texts for translation), then 1989 is the year of a fundamental change in the socio-political circumstances of the editorial process. The basic method will be the creation, processing and interpretation of research, which should consistently and without simplistic evaluations bring a "report" on the state of translation of non-fiction texts. It is this approach that will make it possible to complement the history of translation in the second half of the Slovak cultural space. |
2. | Innovations in curriculum development for translators and interpreters | The proposed PhD project calls for innovative research to transform the field of translator and interpreter education in the context of Slovak Republic by developing curricula that are responsive to the changing dynamics of the language services industry and the advent of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). This initiative is a call to action for PhD candidates who are interested in bridging the existing gap between traditional educational frameworks and the real-world demands of translation and interpreting professions. The research should aim to uncover the deficiencies of existing educational models and propose innovative solutions that integrate cutting-edge technologies into teaching and learning processes. The objective is to contribute towards creating a future-proof curriculum that not only enhances the employability of graduates but also equips them with the skills necessary to excel in an increasingly digital and globalized marketplace. Proposals should consider how technological advancements can be harnessed to improve language services, focusing on the practical application of AI and ML tools in translation and interpreting tasks. In addition to the foundational goals outlined, project proposals should ambitiously aim to assess the innovation potential of university curricula within the Slovak Republic, identifying opportunities for enhancement and incorporating best practices observed in both domestic and international universities. This evaluation should extend to developing strategic partnerships for cooperation among universities, Language Service Providers (LSPs), and practitioners in the field. The intention is to cultivate a collaborative ecosystem that fosters educational excellence, addresses the current and future needs of the language services industry, and promotes the sharing of knowledge and resources between academia and industry stakeholders. |
