Associate Professor Vladimír Zvara studied musicology and aesthetics at Charles University in Prague between 1987 and 1992 with professors Ivan Vojtěch and Miloš Jůzla. During his doctoral studies he completed long-term study stays in Basle, Bayreuth and Vienna. Between 1998 and 2001 he was a member of the Institute of Music Science of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Since 2002 he has been a member of the Department of Musicology of the Faculty of Arts, CU where he teaches courses in history of opera, history of the 19th and 20th century music and aesthetics of music. He was appointed Associate Professor in 2005 and Head of the department in 2007. From 1996 to 2007 he was a dramaturge at the Slovak National Theatre opera house where he brought to life several distinctive projects, e.g. Martin Burlas’ opera Coma. Currently he is involved in various operatic productions as a dramaturge. Among his most distinctive productions are those prepared in cooperation with the director Peter Konwitschny (Janáček’s From the House of the Dead - Zürich and Vienna, 2011; Jenůfa – Graz, 2014; The Makropulos Affair – Bratislava, 2016). He taught at universities in Bayreuth and Prague and at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava and has participated in different international research projects. He is an active publicist, editor and translator. Between 2000 and 2012 he was a chairman of the management board of the Ján Cikker Foundation and is a member of the editorial boards of the journals Studia musicologica (Brno, since 2008) and acta.musicologica.cz (since 2004).
Associate Professor Zvara was appointed to the position of the Vice-dean for research and post graduate studies on 01 July, 2019.
